What is Gummy Smile Correction

Posted on: April 16, 2018

Gummy smile correction is available to remedy gummy smiles. Gummy smiles, also known as an excessive gingival display, occur when one smiles and excessive gum tissue appears over the upper teeth.  Gummy smiles make patients feel extremely self-conscious for good reason. Just about nobody enjoys the appearance of a gummy smile.

Thankfully, the dental technology works to the point that gummy smile correction is now possible without considerable pain or time in the dentist's chair.  Visit your dentist to determine which approach is ideal for your unique gum problem. The dentist will analyze your oral health, determine what is causing the gummy smile and make strides toward beautifying your smile.

Gummy Smile Correction

The gummy smile correction approach appropriate for your mouth hinges on the cause of the gummy smile in the first place.  All sorts of gummy smile correction treatment options are available. If the root cause of the gummy smile is due to the jaws or teeth, orthodontics might be able to move the bite into the proper position and minimize gum prominence.  The dentist might also use Invisalign® or braces with temporary anchorage devices.

These devices are small titanium implants that connect to the bone above the tooth to form a reliable point from which one can apply force. This approach is similar to headgear in that we place it in the mouth. While this approach to gummy smile correction might seem a bit scary, there is no reason to worry.  This procedure is straightforward, fairly simple and temporary.

Jaw Surgery With Orthodontic Treatments

If your jaw protrusion is severe or moderate, jaw surgery or orthognathic surgery in combination with orthodontic treatment will likely prove to be the optimal approach.  The oral surgeon re-contours the jaw so it is the proper size. The surgeon then moves it up to the proper position prior to placing the screws and plates. The patient will be under general anesthesia, making a hospital stay necessary.

The process often starts with braces that the patient wears for about a year's time.  The patient then goes through the surgery and receives another round of orthodontic treatment in order to lock their bite in the proper position. While jaw surgery has a lengthy recovery period and a high gummy smile correction cost, it produces legitimate results.

Gummy Smile Correction for Excess Gum Tissue

If there is an abundance of gum tissue, the periodontist can perform gummy smile correction with a gingivectomy.  This procedure removes the excess gum tissue. The gums are then reshaped to display the actual teeth instead of the gums.  The end result is a smile you are proud to put on display.

Laser gum contouring procedures are also helpful for the removal of excess gum tissue.  Opt for this approach to gummy smile correction and you will not have to go under the knife. Non-invasive lasers really can remove excess gum tissue without inducing pain or a lengthy period of time in the dentist's chair.
