Learning more about how sedation dentistry can help you when you need to undergo certain dental procedures allows you to make educated decisions about your oral health. It may be easier for you to let your dental professional make all the decisions, but you need to be a part of these decisions as it is your oral health that is in need of treatment.
If you are currently in need of a full mouth extraction so you can wear dentures, understanding your sedation options will help you make a decision that is right for you.
About sedation dentistry
Today’s sedation options offer patients different levels of relaxation. When it comes to choosing the right one, the factors that need to be considered include how anxious the patient is, how well they tolerate discomfort or pain and whether they suffer from any form of dental fear or anxiety.
According to the American Dental Association, sedation is an effective way to make many patients comfortable during their dental visit.
There are a few different sedation options patients can choose from, with each option offering specific benefits. Nitrous oxide is more commonly known as laughing gas and is a minimal sedation option that allows patients to remain awake yet feel relaxed. A moderate sedation option allows patients to remain awake, yet they will not remember a lot from the appointment. Deep sedation places patients in a state of relaxed consciousness, but they can easily be awakened. General anesthesia allows for complete unconsciousness.
When full mouth extractions are necessary
Full mouth extractions are necessary when there is no chance of saving one's teeth. When there is too much dental decay or gum disease present, the teeth can no longer be treated and therefore need to be extracted from the mouth. The teeth can be extracted all at once or it can be done over a few dental visits. Once the patient has healed from the tooth extraction process, they will need to choose a type of dentures so their mouth can function properly.
Getting new dentures
When a patient has undergone a full mouth extraction, their denture choices include conventional dentures and implant-supported dentures. Conventional dentures are dentures that rest on the top of a patient's gums, and which are held in place via natural suction or by using a denture adhesive.
Implant-supported dentures are dentures that are held securely in place by using four to six strategically placed dental implants. When a patient chooses implant-supported dentures, it does mean that they need to undergo the implant surgical process, which takes several months to complete.
