Sedation  Dentistry

At Art of Smiles – Norman D. Knowles, D.M.D., we understand that many patients have anxiety about going to the dentist. Unfortunately, some patients will often neglect dental issues because of their fears of going to the dentist, making these problems worse in the long run.

That’s where sedation dentistry comes in. If you need dental work in Vero Beach, FL, our sedation dentist can help you feel at ease. We offer a variety of sedation levels and options that will minimize pain and maximize your overall comfort and relaxation.

Sedation dentistry is safe, takes place in a controlled setting, and patients are able to communicate with our team throughout the course of treatment. If you’re interested in learning more about sedation dentistry, get in touch with us today!

Levels of  Sedation We Offer

Mild Sedation

If the thought of having your teeth cleaned or a cavity filled makes you nervous, nitrous oxide is a solution. Known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide is a mild form of sedation that can help you relax during your appointment. All of your reflexes are intact, breathing is not affected, and you recover immediately once the gas is removed. This level is frequently called “anxiolysis.”

Nitrous oxide wears off quickly, so patients can resume their normal activities after treatment. Our team can also administer local anesthesia to numb any areas we may work extensively on. We typically administer nitrous oxide for our general dentistry services.

Moderate or Conscious Sedation

Those with mild to moderate anxiety may benefit from oral conscious sedation. Our sedation dentist, Dr. Knowles, may prescribe an anti-anxiety medication prior to your scheduled appointment. Valium and/or its derivatives may be administered both orally and under the tongue to provide a deeper level of sedation and relaxation.

This medication will make you drowsy, but you will still be awake throughout treatment. Your reflexes are still intact and breathing is generally not affected. While this form of sedation provides more relaxation, the medication takes a while to wear off and you will need to be accompanied by someone to drive you home. If you’re having restorative dental treatment and feel nervous, oral sedation is an option.

IV Sedation

If you suffer from severe anxiety, especially when it’s time to visit the dentist, IV sedation can help you feel relax. During this form of treatment, you’ll receive a sedative intravenously, which provides a deeper and controlled level of sedation.

Patients typically feel groggy or sleepy, but they can still speak, answer questions, and their reflexes remain intact. This type of treatment works instantaneously, and Dr. Knowles can easily adjust the levels you’re receiving. IV sedation is a safe and reliable solution if you’re nervous about undergoing restorative or implant dental treatment. It is required that someone drives you home following treatment.
