How Long Do Dental Fillings Last?

Posted on: May 16, 2018

Dental fillings are one of the most common procedures performed at a dental office. When someone is experiencing tooth decay it is necessary for that tooth to be treated or the decay will only continue to get worse. An experienced dentist is able to repair any tooth decay by using dental fillings to restore the tooth so that it can once again properly function. Anytime a tooth is in need of repair there are often a few choices available due to the modern dental technologies available these days.

Dental filling materials

The fact that there are quite a few materials that a dentist can choose from when a patient is in need of dental fillings means that there are choices available. While some of the dental filling materials will work perfectly fine for one dental patient, another dental patient may experience any number of health-related issues. This is because not all dental filling materials are going to be biocompatible with all patients, which often has to do with an allergic reaction to certain dental materials. This makes it a good idea for all dental patients to always understand their dental filling options.

How long do dental fillings last?

How long a dental filling is going to last is going to depend on the type of material used for filling the cavity. Other factors that come into play for how long dental fillings will last include how much of the dental filling material was used, the location of the dental filling and the overall extent of the tooth repair.

Silver fillings, aka amalgam fillings. Silver fillings have been used for many years. They are made using a few metals that have been known to cause health issues in some dental patients. While silver fillings are said to last between 10 and 15 years, some dental patients have had amalgam fillings for upwards of 20 years and have reported no issues.

Porcelain fillings, aka inlays or onlays. Porcelain fillings are gaining in popularity because they are not easily seen like silver fillings. They are also stronger than silver fillings as they tend to last between 20 and 30 years. Because porcelain fillings are able to match the color of the teeth they are often used for dental patients wanting a smile makeover.

Gold fillings. Gold fillings are one of the more popular dental filling choices because they work well when it comes to treating and repairing tooth decay issues. Gold is also very compatible with gum tissues, which means most patients do not have to worry about biocompatibility issues. Gold fillings are often able to last between 20 and 25 years.
